The Sandberg Instituut Amsterdam, part of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, offers Master’s programmes in Fine Arts, Applied Arts, Design, and Interior Architecture. The Design Department is a think tank for visual strategies and since 2000 they organize together with the Dutch Cultural Media Fund the yearly masterclass ‘Sandberg@Mediafonds’. During this 5-month-long professional lab, new forms of digital storytelling are developed. The 2013 edition “Liquid journalism” was set up in collaboration with HKU, Utrecht School of the Arts, the Association of Investigative Journalists and What Design Can Do.
Dutch government declared the creative industries as one of nine top sectors for the Dutch economy. The Dutch Creative Industries Council is an independent strategic advisory board to this creative industries top sector. The DCIC wants to stimulate the innovative power of the Netherlands by increasing the impact of the Dutch creative industries. With this objective connections are made and intensified both within and outside the sector. The Council warmly supports What Design Can Do because of its multidisciplinary display of the creative industry’s potentials.
Staff development in creative industries, that’s GOC. GOC gathers and develops knowledge and translates it into products and services that range from business advice to tailor made courses. De Stadsschouwburg, Amsterdam’s city theatre hall, is the leading centre of theatre culture in the Netherlands. The theatre hall offers the public a programme of theatre plays, modern dance, music theatre and cross-overs. In its Expanded Theatre programme the Stadsschouwburg co-operates with other parties and organizations to bring all kinds of current and social issues to the stage. The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is the largest museum of modern and contemporary art and design in the Netherlands. The museum’s history and unique relationship with design is shown by its substantial design collection. The Stedelijk holds its leading position by closely following developments within the field and by collaborating with new initiatives like WDCD.

The Trotter, a mobile billboard, is a great solution for temporary outdoor advertising and signing. Trotter mobile billboards are available in three sizes and can be placed virtually everywhere. Trotter is part of What Design Can Do on 16 & 17 May with a small exhibition in public space on the Leidseplein.

The Melkweg (The Milkyway), located in a former dairy factory neighbouring the Stadsschouwburg, is one of the most well-known cultural centres within and outside the Netherlands, and is unique because of a programme that unites five artistic disciplines under one roof: music, dance/theatre, film, photography and media art. This year What Design Can Do extends to the rooms of the Melkweg for the first time.
